32nd WEGEMT School |
10-14 July 2000
This event was hosted by the University of Plymouth, Institute of Marine Studies
Marine Coatings, their function, application and performance, are central to any engineering project in the marine environment. The choice of coating in any area will have a major impact on initial and life-cycle costs of a construction, and will affect, and be affected by, environmental issues both local and global. The coatings industry has seen major changes in recent years. Materials that were effective in years past may have become ineffective, as organisms have developed a resistance to an anti-fouling toxin perhaps, component chemicals that have been found to be toxic to human life have been banned. In other instances, coating application and removal methods have become unacceptable or expensive. In response to these material, economic and legislative changes there has been intensive research to find viable alternatives and methods, it is considered timely for an event to bring together the results of recent work, to examine the problems remaining and to consider the way ahead.
The structure of such an event is outlined below and the presentations call upon those researchers, both academic and industrial, who are active in the field. The course content will address a number of relevant areas with course material and documents forming an integrated up-to-date reference for use in both graduate and undergraduate programmes in universities, and for use by practising or research engineers.
